Tunis

I was incredibly fortunate to be chosen to attend the Nikos Economopoulos photo workshop in the vibrant city of Tunis in April 2026. Having participated in several of Nikos’s workshops, I can confidently say that as a Magnum photographer, the caliber of instruction and feedback is nothing short of exceptional. These workshops kick off with an exhilarating portfolio review, uniting the group in shared inspiration. Nikos’s guidance on approaching your upcoming shoots is invaluable, as he shares both general and specific insights into the art of photography. On that thrilling first day, you’ll venture out to capture the essence of the city, selecting, editing, and presenting your work to the group and a few esteemed guests. For this workshop, Nikos invited two local journalists who enrich the experience with their profound understanding of the area and its people. The highlight of the workshop is the personal critique by Nikos; his sharp, candid honesty has propelled my photography skills to new heights. He provides thoughtful direction for the following day, and if your photos resonate, he selects them for your final portfolio review. It’s a remarkable opportunity to immerse yourself in photography for a few days, refining your craft. For a Magnum photographer, his rates are surprisingly reasonable—around $1000—especially when compared to others who charge upwards of $3000 for a workshop. With a small number of participants, typically around eight, you receive ample time for in-depth reviews, unlike the 10-20 participants seen in some other esteemed workshops where personal attention diminishes. If you’re contemplating a workshop and ready to elevate your photography, I wholeheartedly recommend one with Nikos, provided you’re open to the essential critique that fosters growth. Tunis itself is a mesmerizing backdrop for street photography; locals are generally unbothered by photographers capturing candid moments, and their warm friendliness makes the experience truly enriching. The blend of cultures—French colonial influences, African heritage, Middle Eastern traditions, and Southern European flair—creates a fascinating tapestry. Just a word of caution: securing a beer might be a challenge in this predominantly Muslim country, but the cultural diversity is absolutely magnificent. Below is a selection of photographs that Nikos chose for my portfolio, which I hope will pave the way for future triumphs in photo competitions. Previous workshops have already seen my selected works being recognized and awarded, fueling my passion for this incredible art form.

A few other photographs truly captivated me, even though Nikos chose not to select them. In my view, these images are nothing short of extraordinary; they possess a unique spark that demands attention. Yet, it requires a discerning eye to differentiate between remarkable artistry and merely “nice” images. At times, you must let go of your favorites. But I invite you to be the judge—perhaps he was indeed wise in not electing these striking visuals.
