ISTANBUL

Nikos Economopoulos is a Magnum photographer who runs monthly workshops, all over the world, always in very photographic locations. I was lucky enough to attend one of his workshops in Istanbul. I also attended one in Palermo. Nikos workshops typically consist of initially reviewing your portfolio, then going out shooting during the day, followed by a group critique in the evening, then a meal out together at night. The small group helped to get a lot of his experience and brilliant feedback. I can honestly say that I learnt more about photography from these workshops than anywhere else. He is an absolute master of his craft, and a fantastic teacher. He gives honest feedback, and helps to build a portfolio during the week. I was impressed by how quickly he could “read” your photos, then give perfect feedback. Probably my highest photographic accolade was the he told me on several occasions that I “worked really hard at photography”, that meant a lot to me. However he also told me “I knew nothing about the history of photography” that feedback was what energised me to study for my diploma in photography with the Institute of Photography. Thanks for the feedback Nikos, which lead me to understand some of the history of photography.

Istanbul - A workshop with Nikos Economopoulos
In this photograph, Nikos very quickly and passionately emphasised that the beauty emerges from the striking balance of the two subjects at the edges of the frame, which I hadn’t even consciously seen. Yet, I felt an undeniable connection to the child in the T-shirt and the T-shirts hanging up, as they vibrantly captured the very spirit of the moment and stirred something deep within me. He was right, and I was learning.
